Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, on Tuesday met Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first time since becoming Field Marshal. The meeting took place alongside Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a day after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit concluded in Tianjin.
Munir, who became Field Marshal earlier this year, had previously met China’s Vice-President Han Zheng during his first visit to Beijing in July. However, this was his first formal meeting with the Chinese President, unlike his predecessor General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who had met Xi earlier.
The SCO summit, attended by leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, concluded with discussions on various regional and global issues.
Munir and Sharif will also attend a grand military parade in Beijing on Wednesday, marking the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
The parade is expected to showcase China’s latest military technology, which is of great interest to Pakistan, as over 80% of its military equipment is sourced from China.
During their meeting, both sides held broad talks on bilateral ties and regional cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, part of the Pakistani delegation, said the discussions were wide-ranging.
Xi stressed the importance of the China-Pakistan relationship, especially as the world faces rapid changes unseen in a century. He said the two countries should work to build a closer “China-Pakistan community with a shared future" to bring benefits to their peoples and serve as a model for the wider region.
Xi also expressed China’s readiness to work with Pakistan on upgraded versions of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement. He urged Pakistan to ensure the safety of Chinese workers, projects, and institutions in the country.
Pakistan Prime Minister praised Xi’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI) launched at the SCO summit, calling it significant for world peace, development, and stability. He pledged Pakistan’s full support and active participation in implementing the initiative.
Additionally, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the One-China principle and expressed hope for further strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two nations. He also promised to do everything possible to protect Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan.
