Pak intel officer shot dead while rescuing woman from kidnappers in Islamabad

A Group Captain serving with the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Intelligence Directorate was shot dead in Islamabad after he intervened to help a woman during an abduction attempt, according to the Pakistan Air Force.

The incident took place on July 5 near Shaheen Chowk, close to the Air Headquarters and Air University in the Pakistani capital. The officer was identified as Group Captain Asim Tariq.

According to the PAF, Asim Tariq was travelling through the area when he noticed a woman arguing with a man on a motorcycle. The officer immediately stepped in after realising the woman appeared to be in distress.

PAF SAYS OFFICER INTERVENED TO HELP

In its account of the incident, the Pakistan Air Force said the motorcyclist was attempting to abduct the woman, who was later identified as his office colleague. The PAF said Group Captain Asim approached the pair to help the woman and confronted the suspect.

An argument followed.

The PAF said the suspect then pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the officer before fleeing the scene on his motorcycle.

Group Captain Asim sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died during the incident.

WOMAN DESCRIBES ABDUCTION ATTEMPT

According to the Pakistan Air Force, the woman later told police that the suspect was not a stranger but someone she worked with.

She said the accused had offered her a lift after work, and she accepted. However, she alleged that he later changed the planned route and headed towards a deserted area without her consent.

After the shooting, the attacker escaped from the scene on his motorcycle before security personnel arrived. Police later recorded the woman's statement as part of the investigation.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, and there was no immediate announcement regarding any arrest.

The killing occurred near one of Islamabad's most sensitive security zones, close to the Pakistan Air Force Headquarters and Air University.
