The counting of votes will take place on June 4. In the 2019 assembly election, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won 112 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 23

The Election Commission announced on Saturday that Odisha will vote for a 224-member state assembly poll alongside the 21 Lok Sabha seats in four phases on May 13, 20, 25, and June 1. The dates coincide with the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th phases of the general elections to be held across the country. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

In the 2014 assembly election, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won 112 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 23 seats, and the Congress obtained nine.

On the other hand, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, out of the 21 seats, the BJD secured 12 seats, while the BJP clinched eight, leaving the Indian Congress (INC) with a single seat.

In 2019, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik defied the national trend where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appeared to be sweeping most parts of the country.

With this win, Patnaik became the third chief minister in the country to be in power for a fifth consecutive term, following former West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu and Sikkim’s Pawan Kumar Chamling.

The BJD president came to power in the March 2000 elections with an alliance with the BJP. Since then, the party has been on a winning streak year after year, improving its tally in every poll.

Over the last three elections, BJD scored 61 seats in 2004, 103 in 2009, and 117 in 2014.
