In what can be called another incident of rising settler violence in the West Bank, a large group of armed men attacked a plant nursery and beat up a 67-year-old deaf Palestinian man, who was trying to flee the premises.

Video footage, obtained by The Associated Press, shows dozens of masked men with sticks attacking a nursery and beating and injuring a Palestinian in the northern West Bank village of Deir Sharaf.

The attack, which took place on January 8, was witnessed by two persons, who are members of the family that owned the nursery, and saw 67-year-old Basim Saleh Yassin being attacked by the group. They told AP, on condition of anonymity, that Israeli settlers beat Yassin as he was trying to flee. Four cars were burned and destroyed at the nursery, they added.

The video, filmed by security cameras, shows men dressed mostly in black, faces covered, with several hitting and kicking Yassin, who is kneeling. The witnesses said Yassin is in the hospital and has broken bones in his hand with other injuries on his face, chest and back.

They said when the workers heard the group coming, they fled but as Yassin is deaf he could not hear people warning him to leave. In the video, he can be seen running from the group before falling to the ground.

One man kicks him and another hits him twice with what appears to be a stick. Yassin stays on his knees as he is struck again and then places his hands on the ground on all fours. As the men are leaving, one kicks him in the head while others strike him again until he is seen lying on the pavement.

According to one of the family members that owns the nursery, it was the third time in a year that the facility was attacked. The previous incident was in September and cost the business more than USD 600,000 as offices and facilities were damaged.

Settler attacks ramped up during the Palestinian olive harvest season in October and early November and have continued since. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the perpetrators “a handful of extremists" and urged law enforcement to pursue them for “the attempt to take the law into their own hands". But rights groups and Palestinians said the problem is far greater than a few bad apples, and attacks have become a daily phenomenon across the territory.

Israel’s army did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the incident.

Two weeks ago, a viral video showed an Israeli reservist soldier armed with a rifle ramming his vehicle into a Palestinian man offering namaz in the occupied West Bank area.

The attack was confirmed by the Israeli military, which said the reservist’s military service had been terminated as he acted “in severe violation of his authority" and his weapon had been confiscated.

In another incident around the same period, five Israeli settlers were arrested over their alleged involvement in an attack on a Palestinian home that injured a baby in the West Bank. The eight-month-old girl suffered “moderate injuries to the face and head".

Israeli troops and settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank, including many militants as well as dozens of civilians, after the war that broke out in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attack in 2023. At least 44 Israelis, both soldiers and civilians, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations in the same period in the West Bank.
