US President Donald Trump has shared screenshots of what appear to be private text messages exchanged with French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, posting them publicly on his social media platform Truth Social ahead of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.
The posts, published on Monday, show images of messages displayed in a phone-style chat format, suggesting they were direct text messages sent to Trump by the two leaders.
In one post, Trump shared a message attributed to French President Emmanuel Macron, which begins with “My friend" and refers to alignment on Syria and Iran. The message also includes Macron saying he does not understand Trump’s position on Greenland, an issue that has recently caused friction between Washington and several European capitals. Macron is shown proposing a possible G7-related meeting in Paris after Davos, with the participation of Ukraine, Denmark, Syria and Russia on the sidelines, and inviting Trump for a dinner in Paris.
Trump posted the screenshot with the caption “Note from President Emmanuel Macron, of France," without adding further comment.
In a separate post, Trump shared another screenshot attributed to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, thanking him for what the message describes as Trump’s actions in Syria. The message says Rutte would highlight Trump’s work during media engagements at Davos and expresses commitment to “finding a way forward on Greenland." It ends with Rutte saying he is looking forward to meeting Trump.
Trump captioned that post: “Thank you to Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO!"
The public release of these messages comes as Trump prepares to attend the Davos forum, where global leaders, policymakers and business executives are expected to discuss security, economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.
Trump’s recent remarks on Greenland and calls for greater US control over strategic territories have unsettled allies in Europe and raised concerns about strains within the transatlantic alliance.
The disclosures have drawn attention for making public communications that are typically kept confidential between heads of state and senior alliance officials. The move reflects Trump’s unconventional approach to diplomacy, where private exchanges between world leaders can quickly become public.
