The son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Marius Borg Hoiby, has been formally charged with 32 offences, including four counts of rape, domestic violence, and other serious crimes, prosecutors said on Monday.

Hoiby, who is not a royal by title but grew up in the public eye after his mother married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, has been under investigation since his arrest on August last year. He was taken into custody after allegedly assaulting a girlfriend.

According to public prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo, the charges also include repeated violence, harassment, vandalism, disturbing the peace, and violating restraining orders. Hoiby is further accused of secretly filming the private parts of several women without their consent.

“These are very serious acts that can leave lasting scars and destroy lives," Henriksbo said during a press briefing. “The fact that Marius Borg Hoiby is a member of the royal family should, of course, not mean that he should be treated more lightly or more severely than if similar acts had been committed by others."

The rapes he is accused of reportedly happened in 2018, 2023, and 2024, with one incident allegedly taking place even after the police investigation had already started.

Hoiby, now 28, has admitted to assault and property damage from the August 2024 incident. In a public statement days after his arrest, he said he was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time, and had long struggled with mental health and substance abuse.

Although raised in the royal household, Marius Borg Hoiby has never held an official royal role. He grew up alongside his younger half-siblings, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, now aged 21 and 19.

If found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison. The royal family has not yet commented on the charges.
