Zohran Mamdani’s historic mayoral oath ceremony inside a New York subway station turned into a cultural spectacle after videos of the newly sworn-in mayor dancing to a Punjabi track went viral. The ceremony concluded with a live performance by Toronto-based Punjabi singer Babbulicious, who performed his popular track Gaddi Red Challenger. Zohran Mamdani was seen singing and dancing along with his wife Rama Duwaji as hundreds of supporters joined in.
Sharing photos from the event on X (formerly Twitter), Babbulicious wrote, “NEW YORK VICH MUNDA RENDA!!! Thank you Mr Mayor for having me perform at the inauguration."
Zohran Mamdani, who took his oath on the Quran, became New York City’s first Muslim mayor. A vocal critic of US President Donald Trump, Zohran Mamdani has built his political identity around progressive politics and strong outreach to immigrant and minority communities.
Throughout his campaign, Zohran Mamdani made a concerted effort to connect with the South Asian diaspora, often highlighting his multicultural roots. His mother is acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, a Punjabi Hindu from India, while his father Mahmood Mamdani is a Ugandan of Indian Muslim descent.
During the election campaign, Zohran Mamdani released a Bollywood-inspired Hindi campaign video and played the song Dhoom Machale during his victory speech.
