Nepal flash floods leave 105 Indians, 37 NRIs missing near Tibet border

At least 105 Indians and 37 NRIs are among nearly 400 people missing after flash floods in Nepal swept through Rasuwa district bordering Tibet, officials said on Wednesday. Most of the Indians were headed for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in Tibet.

The floods also killed four people, damaged settlements along the river and hit critical infrastructure, including at least a dozen hydropower projects. Officials said the sudden surge affected central Nepal districts along the Tibet border.

The floodwaters rushed through the Bhote Koshi River at around 9 am local time after coming from the Tibet side, affecting Rasuwa and Dhading districts bordering Tibet and Nuwakot district southwest of Kathmandu, officials said.

According to a statement by the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 travellers have gone missing in the Rasuwa floods. Of them, 291 are foreigners and 93 are Nepalese nationals.

The missing travellers include 105 Indian tourists and 37 NRIs. The others are from the US, Malaysia, the UK, South Africa, Australia and the Netherlands.

Samrat Tours and Travel agency said at least 59 of the missing Indians were pilgrims travelling for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issued emergency numbers for assistance and information related to Indian nationals affected by the flash floods. In a post on X, it said people can contact +977 985 131 6807 or +977 970 910 7500.

The Nepal Tourism Board also issued helpline numbers, including toll-free emergency number 1234, hotline 1144 and tourist police number 9851289445 for help.

Local media reports said the Nepal Tourism Board, Tourist Police and tourism stakeholders are working to verify the whereabouts and safety status of those who were in or travelling through the affected areas. The floods left at least four dead, damaged key infrastructure and left hundreds, including Indians and NRIs, unaccounted for.
