The future of Nepal remains uncertain as Gen-Z protesters, who toppled the government over alleged corruption and nepotism in violent demonstrations triggered by a sudden social media ban, remain divided over leadership of the Himalayan nation.

Wednesday was calmer compared to Tuesday, which saw former prime ministers assaulted, a former first lady die from burns after her home was set ablaze, and the finance minister stripped, chased, and beaten. These events led to resignations by the president and prime minister, paving the way for the army to temporarily take control.

When the moment came to select an interim leader, consensus eluded the protesters. Outside the Nepal Army headquarters, shouting broke out between a faction backing former Chief Justice Sushila Karki and another supporting Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah as the youth movement debated fresh leadership.

A follow-up meeting between Nepal Army Chief Ashok Sigdel and the Gen-Z protesters is scheduled for Thursday.

General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma called on political actors, security agencies, civil society, media, and the international community to support peace efforts.
