The Khyber Pakhtukhwa administration came down heavily on the Pakistani government for signing the Donald Trump-led Gaza peace deal.

Calling it a betrayal of the “Muslim ummah", Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief minister Sohail Afridi condemned the federal government and the military establishment for endorsing Trump’s plan for the Palestinians.

Afridi said by signing the deal, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistani Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir have prioritised political interests over the lives of Palestinians. He alleged that Sharif has “sold the blood of Gazans" and demanded that Pakistani citizens should be taken into confidence on such international agreements. He said no step should be taken that “hurts the self-respect of Pakistanis" or the global Muslim community.

“We demand that the public be taken into confidence and that no step be taken that hurts the self-respect of Pakistanis and the entire Muslim ummah," Afridi said.

During his address, he launched a spirited defence of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan. He dismissed long-standing allegations labelling Khan as a foreign agent, noting that for 26 years, critics have called him a “Zionist agent".

Afridi further said Khan would never have compromised on the lives and honour of Palestinians or Kashmiris had he not been imprisoned. He turned the “Zionist agent" allegation around onto the current leadership, saying Sharif and Field Marshal Munir are the ones acting in such a capacity by signing off on the “Board of Peace".

Highlighting a shift in strategy towards “street power", he also warned the “powerful circles" that the public is prepared for large-scale civil unrest. He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is being “pushed to the wall" and cautioned that if formal institutions continue to deny the party justice and suppress their political rights, the Constitution grants them the right to hold peaceful protests.

“Our emotions have been toyed with, and our Muslim brothers have been sold out," he said, adding that Khan has already tasked him with working on a “street movement".

The chief minister said while negotiations remain an option through representatives like Mahmood Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, the window of opportunity is closing.

“If the call for protest comes from Adiala, the public is ready, and I am also ready to lead," he said, sending a clear signal to Islamabad on the potential for nationwide demonstrations.
