Murmu hails Indian community in Romania amid key global developments

President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday praised the Indian community in Romania, calling them "true representatives of India" and saying their achievements help India's progress and strengthen its ties with countries around the world. In other international developments, the United Nations commented on student demonstrations in New Delhi, a Canadian court handed an additional prison term to a contract killer linked to a separate Air India case, and the US saw fresh legal and legislative action on H-1B visas.

Elsewhere, a US federal appeals court refused to stay an order that struck down the Trump administration's USD 100,000 fee on H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers, even as a senator introduced a bill seeking a three-year pause on new H-1B visas and to formally bring back that fee. In China, five people were killed and three injured after a loess collapse buried a house in Shanxi province.

Speaking in Bucharest, Murmu said members of the Indian diaspora in Romania are "true representatives of India". She said their achievements contribute to New Delhi's progress and deepen India's relations with countries across the globe.

At the United Nations, the world body said it is "aware" of the students' demonstrations in New Delhi. It said it is important that people wishing to protest peacefully should be allowed to do so without any "fear" of harassment, arrest or injury.

In Canada, a contract killer already serving a life term for the murder of a former suspect in the Air India Kanishka bombing has been sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison in a separate murder case involving a fatal shooting, according to a media report.

In the United States, a federal appeals court rejected the Trump administration's attempt to revive the USD 100,000 H-1B visa fee by refusing to stay a lower court order that had struck it down. Separately, a US senator introduced a bill in the Senate seeking a three-year pause on the issuance of new H-1B visas and to codify the same USD 100,000 fee.

In China, authorities said five people died and three others were injured after a large amount of loess collapsed onto a village in north China's Shanxi province, burying a house. The developments through the day ranged from Murmu's outreach to the Indian diaspora in Romania to the UN's remarks on protests in Delhi, legal and political moves over H-1B visas in the US, a sentencing order in Canada, and a deadly collapse in China.
