Several developments abroad on Saturday included President Droupadi Murmu concluding her three-nation tour of Europe, the United Nations commenting on student demonstrations in New Delhi, and fresh legal and political moves in the United States over H-1B visas.
In other developments, President Murmu praised the Indian diaspora in Romania, a Canadian court handed an additional 15-year prison term to a contract killer linked to the murder of a former Air India Kanishka bombing suspect, and five people were killed after a loess collapse in China.
President Murmu ended her three-nation European tour in Bucharest after discussions aimed at further strengthening bilateral partnerships in key sectors, including trade and tourism among others.
During her visit to Romania, she also lauded members of the Indian diaspora, calling them "true representatives of India". She said their achievements contribute to New Delhi's progress and strengthen its ties with countries across the globe.
At the United Nations, the organisation said it was "aware" of the students' demonstrations in New Delhi. It added that it is important that people wishing to protest peacefully be allowed to do so without any fear of harassment, arrest or injury.
In the United States, a federal appeals court refused to stay a lower court order that struck down the Trump administration's decision to impose a USD 100,000 fee on H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers. Separately, a US senator introduced a bill in the Senate seeking a three-year pause on the issuance of new H-1B visas and to codify the same USD 100,000 fee that had been struck down by a federal court.
In Canada, a contract killer already serving a life term for the murder of a former suspect in the Air India Kanishka bombing was sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison in a separate case involving a fatal shooting, according to a media report.
In China, authorities said five people were killed and three others were injured after a large amount of loess collapsed onto a village in Shanxi province and buried a house.
Overall, the day saw a mix of diplomatic, legal and humanitarian developments, including President Murmu's European tour coming to an end, the UN's remarks on peaceful protest, action in the US over H-1B visas, a sentencing in Canada, and a deadly collapse in China.
