Ahead of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites late Thursday night, Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad had established an operational base inside Iran stocked with drones, a senior Israeli security official said.
According to the source, the drones—smuggled into the country well in advance—were deployed during the strikes.
“At the onset of the attack – and in parallel with Israel Air Force strikes – the Mossad activated systems already in place," Haaretz quoted a source as saying.
An image released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) showed a strike taking place in Iran late Thursday. The official said that explosive-laden drones targeted surface-to-surface missile launchers at a military base near Tehran.
Simultaneously, Mossad commando units were active in central Iran, where they deployed precision-guided weapon systems in open areas near Iranian air defence sites.
The source added that offensive strike technologies were also embedded in vehicles inside Iranian territory, with the specific purpose of disabling surface-to-air missile systems that could pose a threat to Israeli aircraft.
These actions, he claimed, “completely destroyed the Iranian defence systems at the start of the attack."
The source further noted that Mossad’s operations had been meticulously planned and executed well before the air force component of the strike began. The full extent of the damage and Iran’s response remains to be officially confirmed.
The source also noted that Mossad’s operations resulted from extensive, long-term planning, with intelligence gathered over several years.
He said the IDF and Mossad had worked “side by side for years" to build detailed intelligence dossiers on senior figures within Iran’s defence establishment and nuclear program—many of whom were later targeted and killed—as well as on Iran’s strategic missile infrastructure.
In a large-scale offensive overnight into Friday, hundreds of Israeli fighter jets reportedly struck more than 100 targets across Iran, including nuclear facilities and known locations associated with senior Iranian officials.
