Microsoft Teams is popular in the business circuit and the company wants to protect its customers with some important changes.

Teams users will be offered these important security features by default
Microsoft is looking to improve the security of Teams for its users, which is why some of the important features are going to be automatically enabled starting January 2026. The platform has become an easy target for bad actors who push malicious content and files across users, and the company is now blocking or at least alerting the users about possible risks of clicking on a link or downloading a file of that nature.
Microsoft has already informed its Microsoft 365 customers about the default changes that will be applicable for everyone using the meeting app.
Microsoft Teams Big Security Changes: What Happens In 2026
So what changes are going to be default on Teams from January 2026? The company says features like weaponisable file type protection, malicious URL detection and a new mechanism to report false positives which de-ranks the supposed threats.
Having these tools enabled automatically will allow Teams users to see all the dangerous warning labels that may have suspicious URLs and also block possible files that may cause harm to your system. Microsoft claims, “This update helps safeguard users from malicious content and provides options to report incorrect detections."
It will be coming into effect from January 12, 2026 and those who have already switched on these features will see no change to their Teams security options.
The company also wants to prevent online scams which is why Teams users are now automatically blocked from taking screen shots during a meeting and warn if they see higher than usual traffic from external domains.
It makes a lot of sense for other platforms like Google Meet and Zoom to also safeguard its users and have these features enabled by default rather than making them change it from the settings.
Google has introduced more cosmetic features in recent months, wherein it is using AI to improve the lighting quality for calls or even change the settings with improved audio response among others. We’ve also seen AI offering recording and transcription which is a real life saver for millions who don’t want to do it manually for every meeting.
