US President Donald Trump revealed- during a White House meeting- that his wife Melania Trump had shaped his views on Russian President Vladimir Putin as she offered a sharply skeptical contrast to his own initial impressions of the Moscow leader and his war in Ukraine.

“My conversations with Putin are always very pleasant," Donald Trump said while seated alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, adding, “I say, isn’t that a very lovely conversation? And then the missiles go off that night."

He continued with a personal anecdote, saying, “I go home, I tell the First Lady: I spoke with Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation. She said: ‘Really? Another city was just hit.’"

Born in Slovenia, formerly part of Yugoslavia, Melania Trump has carried a personal perspective on Europe’s turbulent geopolitics. In 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she broke her usual silence on policy matters by urging donations to the Red Cross, calling the images from Ukraine “heartbreaking and horrific".

On Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump further said, “Look, I don’t want to say he’s an assassin. But he’s a tough guy. It’s been proven over the years. He’s fooled a lot of people."

The remarks comes as Donald Trump announced that the United States will be sending additional Patriot air-defense batteries and interceptor missiles to Ukraine, with costs covered by European allies. The US President confirmed the systems would be delivered “within days" and financed by Germany and other NATO members. Ukraine currently has six functioning Patriot systems and the newly pledged units are expected to bolster its defences significantly amid continued Russian missile and drone attacks on major cities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the support in his nightly address, saying, “I am grateful to President Trump for his readiness to support the protection of our people’s lives."
