A 22-year-old man, wanted for murder in India, has been arrested by US border authorities after being denied entry to Canada. Vishat Kumar has an Interpol Red Notice against him and has been living in the US illegally since last year.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Kumar, who was concealing his identity, was arrested at the Port of Buffalo, Peace Bridge border crossing.

Kumar had entered the US illegally in 2024 and didn't attend a scheduled asylum interview.

During a second inspection, CBP officers discovered he was hiding his real identity. Biometric technology confirmed his true identity, showing he had used a false name and date of birth.

Further investigation uncovered an Interpol Red Notice against him, linking him to a murder case in India.

After his arrest, Kumar was handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Enforcement Removal Operations (ICE/ERO).

He is currently detained at the Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, while awaiting removal proceedings from the United States.

An Interpol Red Notice is an alert circulated at the request of a member country through the international policing network, notifying authorities worldwide about a fugitive sought for serious crimes such as murder, rape, child abuse, or armed robbery.

America and India have an extradition treaty, but an Interpol red notice is a police alert, not a diplomatic request. The deportation of a foreign national who is in the United States illegally back to their home country does not require extradition proceedings in court, Ontario-based Post reported.

Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek hailed the security officers for the arrest.

"The apprehension of this individual demonstrates the critical role our officers play in safeguarding our nation and working collaboratively with international partners to uphold justice," Swiatek said.

"This arrest highlights our commitment to ensuring that those who attempt to evade accountability for serious crimes are identified and brought to justice. I commend our officers for their vigilance and dedication to the mission," Swiatek added.
