A dramatic video went viral, showing a man attempting to take his own life by jumping from the upper floors of Masjid al-Haram in Saudi Arabia’s Mecca, and a security officer rushed to intervene and broke the man’s fall, receiving injuries in the process.

The Emirate of the Makkah Region said the Special Force for the Security of the Grand Mosque immediately initiated action after the man attempted to jump from an upper floor. An officer was injured while preventing the man from hitting the ground; authorities said the injury was limited to fractures.

The Haram security forces have issued a statement that said “there was an incident of a person attempting to take his own life from the upper floors of the Grand Mosque."

“A security officer was injured while trying to prevent him from hitting the ground at the moment of his fall. Both individuals were immediately transferred to receive the necessary medical care, and the required official procedures were completed," the forces said.

Footage circulating online showed the man moving toward the edge of the upper level and jumping before security officers rushed in to restrain him. A guard standing below attempted to break the man’s fall, with both persons suffering injuries.

The Chief Imam of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr Abdur Rahman As Sudais, commented on the incident, calling upon visitors “to adhere to regulations and instructions, to revere the sanctity of the place, to observe proper Islamic manners therein, and to devote themselves to worship and obedience."

He warned against what some individuals – though very few – attempt by throwing themselves from upper levels, stressing that this constitutes a form of suicide, which is strictly forbidden in Islamic law, as per the statement.

Makkah authorities said legal procedures are being completed in accordance with applicable regulations. A similar incident took place in 2017, when a man lost his life after jumping from an upper level near the Kaaba as thousands of pilgrims were offering prayers.
