Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, including a notable interaction with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron hails ‘friendship between nations’
French President Emmanuel Macron posted a warm message on social media following his meeting with Modi, writing, “Thank you, my friend, dear Narendra Modi. Nations are stronger when they move forward together. Long live the friendship between our countries!"
During their discussion, Modi and Macron reviewed the expanding India-France strategic partnership, with a particular focus on defence, emerging technologies, space collaboration and the Indo-Pacific.
Both countries are advancing cooperation through long-term frameworks such as “Horizon 2047", the Indo-Pacific roadmap and a defence industrial roadmap. Macron is expected to visit India in 2026 for a summit centred on artificial intelligence.
PM Modi meets global leaders
Modi also met several other world leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
These discussions covered a wide range of topics – from climate action and global economic resilience to technology partnerships and regional stability.
A key announcement on the sidelines was the launch of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership, aimed at enhancing cooperation on digital innovation, critical technologies and research.
Modi said the meetings reaffirmed a “shared commitment to global progress and prosperity".
