At least four paramilitary personnel were killed after terrorists rammed a vehicle into a Pakistan Rangers compound in Karachi and stormed the facility on Saturday, officials said. Heavy gunfire was continuing inside the compound, which has been sealed off, while nearby roads were shut to the public and transport movement.
No terrorist or separatist group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting. Officials said the compound, in the heavily populated Gulistan-e-Jauhar area, was attacked at around 8.30 pm.
A security official said four to six terrorists carried out the attack and were engaged in a gun battle inside the compound. "So far, we know four Rangers personnel have been killed in the attack and some vehicles destroyed as the compound also serves as a transport hub of the Rangers," he said.
The official said Special Security Unit commandos and the Anti-Terrorist Force had reached the spot to carry out the clean-up operation.
A resident said authorities had told people to remain inside their homes, while some residential buildings and areas were without power.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho said initial investigations suggested the attackers arrived in a vehicle and entered the compound after ramming the main gate. He said an explosion was heard when the attack began, though its cause had not yet been established.
"What is confirmed is that as soon as the attack took place, the Rangers personnel immediately took positions and engaged these attackers in a gun battle," Odho said.
The attack on the Rangers compound left at least four personnel dead, damaged vehicles at the facility and triggered an ongoing security operation, with authorities continuing to gather more details.
