External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday held talks with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in the US capital, amid Ottawa’s push to diversify economic partnerships beyond the United States.

“Met many colleagues and counterparts this morning in DC including FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada," Jaishankar wrote on X. He added that he also met Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

Jaishankar shared a photograph from the meeting showing him with Anand and other counterparts at a diplomatic gathering in Washington DC.

The meeting comes as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares for a likely visit to India in the first week of March. According to India’s High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik, Carney is expected to travel to New Delhi to sign agreements on uranium, energy, critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

“I have a feeling in the first week of March is what we are looking at," Patnaik said in a recent interview, outlining the tentative timeline for the visit, according to a report by Reuters.

Carney has been making strong efforts to expand Canada’s global trade footprint beyond its traditional dependence on the US market. At the World Economic Forum in Davos last month, he called for middle powers like Canada to build new coalitions in an increasingly uncertain global order. The outreach to India is seen as part of that broader strategy.

Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson visited India in January for India Energy Week and said the dates for Carney’s trip have not yet been finalised.

“There are plans for the Prime Minister to visit at some point this year. It will depend on the progress we make," Hodgson said last month.
