Israeli opposition politician Yair Golan has criticised the government’s economic management during the ongoing war with Iran, accusing officials of failing to prepare a plan to support citizens during the conflict.

In a post on X, Golan targeted Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, saying he had failed to respond effectively to the economic challenges triggered by the war.

“During wartime, Bezalel Smotrich is unable to rise to the occasion and relies on an economy of ‘with God’s help,’" Golan wrote.

He added that the war had been anticipated for months and argued that the government should have prepared a comprehensive economic strategy before hostilities began.

“The war with Iran has been planned for months. The fact that the Israeli government has not prepared an orderly economic plan to support citizens during the war period is a disgrace," he said.

Golan also criticised the financial burden placed on working Israelis, saying ordinary citizens should not have to bear the cost of the conflict while billions of shekels continue to be allocated to sectors that do not participate in the workforce.

“The serving and working public should not be the one footing the bill for the war out of its own pocket while billions of shekels go to the evading and non-working sector," he wrote, adding, “Soon we will replace them."

War’s Impact on Israel

The criticism comes as Israel continues to face growing pressure from the conflict with Iran. Iranian missile and drone attacks have targeted Israeli cities and military sites, triggering frequent air-raid sirens and forcing civilians to take shelter.

Israel has also carried out large-scale airstrikes on Iranian military facilities and infrastructure, including attacks on airports, bases linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and other strategic sites.

The conflict has disrupted aviation routes, increased security alerts across the country and placed additional strain on Israel’s economy as military spending rises and businesses face uncertainty.
