An Indian-origin student has been arrested in US’ North Carolina on charges of attempting to scam an elderly woman by pretending to be a law enforcement officer.

The student, identified as 21-year-old Kishan Kumar Singh, was arrested in North Carolina’s Guilford County (GCSO), police officials said.

GCSO in a post on X said that scammers are targeting seniors in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, pretending to be law enforcement and demanding money.

“We will NEVER call you and ask for money. Educate yourself and your loved ones," they said.

As per the media reports, the victim reported to Guilford County Sheriff’s Office that she was getting multiple calls from people claiming to be deputies and federal agents.

As a part of the scam, the 78-year-old woman was told that her bank accounts were compromised and was pressured into withdrawing a large amount of money for “safekeeping", the GCSO said in a statement.

The callers had further threatened her saying that her name was tied to criminal activity in another part of the country.

Singh was arrested when he reached the woman’s home posing as a federal agent to take the money. He was living near Cincinnati, Ohio, on a student visa since 2024, the reports said.

He’s now in the Guilford County Detention Center under a $1 million bond and facing felony charges, including attempted obtaining property by false pretenses and exploitation of an elder adult.

Earlier in April, two Indian citizens on student visas were held for scamming an elderly individual and charged with theft, according to authorities.

Mahammadilham Vahora and Hajiali Vahora, both 24 years old, were booked into the El Paso County Jail this month, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office had said.

The two have been charged with crimes against at-risk persons — including robbery and theft — as well as money laundering involving illegal investments.

Both attend the East-West University in Chicago, Illinois.
