An Indian-origin man in Australia has admitted responsibility for his wife’s death but denied that he committed murder.

Vikrant Thakur, 42, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on January 14 for the second hearing in the case over the death of his wife, Supriya Thakur, last December.

Following advice from his lawyer, he told the court, “I plead for manslaughter, but not guilty for murder."

Manslaughter is a lesser charge than murder and is generally applied when a person’s actions unintentionally result in someone’s death. Murder, by contrast, involves intent to kill.

Police were called to a home in Adelaide’s northern suburbs on December 21 after Supriya, 36, was found unconscious. Emergency crews performed CPR, but she could not be revived, NDTV reported.

At his first court appearance, Vikrant did not apply for bail. Prosecutors requested that the case be adjourned for 16 weeks while they await key evidence, including DNA results and the post-mortem report. The matter is scheduled to be heard again in April.

In the meantime, friends and community members have launched a fundraiser to support Supriya’s son. A GoFundMe page describing the appeal said Supriya was a devoted mother who worked long hours to provide a secure future for her child.

“Her tragic passing has left her son without his mother and has turned his life upside down overnight. He is now facing an uncertain future without the person who cared for him most," the description read.

“The funds raised will be used to assist with funeral and memorial expenses, as well as to provide ongoing support and stability for Supriya’s son," it added.
