Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India-China ties have made “steady progress" since his meeting with President Xi Jinping last year, as he met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi to push for more “stable, predictable and constructive" relations.

“Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity," Prime Minister Modi said on social media site X after his meeting with Yi.

On Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar set the tone for the engagement, noting that “having seen a difficult period in our relationship… our two nations now seek to move ahead."

He stressed that “the basis for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward," pointing to the fact that disengagement and dismantling of military infrastructure at the Line of Actual Control remain incomplete ten months after Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping last met.
