India on Saturday welcomed the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled to take place in Alaska on 15 August, where the two leaders are expected to discuss the future of the war in Ukraine.

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the summit “holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace."

“India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th August 2025. This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace," the statement said.

Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s consistent message that “this is not an era of war," the MEA expressed full support for the diplomatic effort and said India is ready to contribute to peace initiatives.

“As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, “This is not an era of war". India, therefore, endorses the upcoming Summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts," the statement added.

Trump-Putin Alaska Summit

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump confirmed the meeting with Putin in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska," Trump wrote.

This confirmation ends weeks of speculation over the venue. Reports earlier suggested that Russian President Putin was interested in holding the summit in the United Arab Emirates. However, the US administration is believed to have insisted on a domestic location for security and diplomatic reasons.

The summit in Alaska will be Trump’s first official meeting with Putin since starting his second term in January 2025. It will also be the first formal US-Russia presidential meeting since June 2021, when former President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.

The meeting is expected to focus mainly on the Ukraine conflict, which has now entered its fourth year. US officials have not yet shared details about the agenda or the team that will accompany Trump.
