A shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday left at least four people, including an off-duty New York City police officer, dead on Monday evening, US local time.

The suspect, who was later neutralised by the police, was identified as Shane Tamura, of Nevada, two people briefed on the investigation told the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, a photo shared by an X user showed how employees at private-equity firm Blackstone’s midtown office shielded themselves on the premises while the shooter was active.

The photo showed sofas and other furniture blocking a passage or a window, while many were seen hiding behind it.

The building also houses some of the country’s top financial firms and the Football League.

The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building around 6.30 pm for a report of someone shot.

Following the incident, Mayor Eric Adams said multiple people were injured, also urging people still inside their office building to stay put because police officers were conducting a floor-by-floor search.

Local TV footage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads. The building includes offices of Blackstone and the consulate general of Ireland.

Some finance workers at an office building down the block were picking up dinner at a corner eatery when they heard a loud noise and saw people running.
