The Interim Government of Bangladesh on Monday hailed the Crimes Tribunal’s (ICT) verdict of death penalty against deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her alleged involvement in crimes against humanity. Calling the judgment “historic", the interim government said that it is the justice that was long demanded by families of those killed in the 2024 crackdown.

The interim government also appealed for nationwide calm and restraint. It said that the public reaction must remain peaceful and within the bounds of law.

“The death sentences handed down to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for crimes against humanity mark a historic verdict. Recognising the gravity of this judgment, the interim government urges people from all sections of society to remain calm, restrained, and responsible," the statement said.

The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, also urged citizens from “all sections of society" to maintain composure, stressing that the emotionally charged nature of the verdict should not lead to disorder on the streets. The government noted that the long-awaited ruling could stir intense emotions, especially among the families of those it described as “martyred in the July uprising." Even then, it appealed to the public to avoid any unruly behaviour, provocation-driven actions, violence, or unlawful activities in the aftermath of the tribunal’s decision.

“All citizens are specifically requested to refrain from any form of unruly behaviour, provocation-driven actions, violence, or unlawful activities in the post-verdict period. The verdict—long awaited, particularly by the families of those martyred in the July uprising—may naturally evoke strong emotions among the public. However, the government strongly warns that no one should act on these emotions in a way that disrupts public order," it added.

It further warned that the state would respond firmly to any attempts to exploit the verdict for political agitation or street violence.

“The government further makes it clear that any attempt to create anarchy, disorder, or disturb public peace will be dealt with strictly," it added.

Sheikh Hasina Sentenced To Death

The interim government’s response came hours after Bangladesh’s Crimes Tribunal sentenced the deposed Prime Minister to death in a case over alleged crimes against humanity. The court found Hasina guilty on three counts, concluding a months-long trial that found her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising last year that led to the fall of her Awami League government.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Mohd Golam Mortuza Majumder, also pronounced its judgement against Hasina’s two aides, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, over the same charges.

The court said the three accused acted in connivance with each other to commit atrocities in order to kill protesters throughout the country. However, it pardoned the former police chief, who “sought an apology from the tribunal and the people of the country".
