A British woman has been reported missing in Greece since August 1, prompting an intensive search-and-rescue operation, according to The Guardian. The 59-year-old Michele Bourda vanished under mysterious circumstances shortly after being seen relaxing on a sunbed.
Bourda was last spotted at Ofryni beach in Kavala, northern Greece, around midday local time on August 1. According to Sky News, she lived in Macedonia with her husband, who is of Greek origin.
She had reportedly gone to the beach with her partner but suddenly disappeared. Her husband is said to have been asleep on the sunbed at the time of her disappearance. However, her personal belongings were found still on the beach, and he immediately contacted the authorities, as cited by The Standard.
In response, the Hellenic Coast Guard and local police launched an extensive search of the beach and surrounding sea. According to reports, three recreational vessels, five fishing boats, and two patrol boats have been deployed to assist in the effort. “The search is very much on, with a patrol vessel and other recreational boats out scouring the seas all along the Strymonian Gulf," a coastguard official said, adding that there are currently no plans to call off the operation.
Greek missing persons charity Lifeline Hellas has issued a Silver Alert for Bourda and published a missing person’s report. The alert reads, “Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the SOS Line 1065."
Bourda is described as 5ft 6in tall, with a slim build. She has straight, shoulder-length blonde hair and hazel eyes. On the day she went missing, she was last seen wearing a two-piece swimsuit adorned with rhinestones, yellow beach shoes, and red sunglasses. Eyewitnesses reported seeing her swimming at around midday.
According to The Sun, a source close to the investigation said, “We are giving it our all. There are still no signs as to whether she went missing on land or sea but right now there are no plans either to end this search."
