Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the latter called him a “skilled and experienced administrator", as the Janata Dal (United) leader took oath for the top office for a record 10th time.

Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan on Thursday in the presence of PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda and several other top leaders of the NDA. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan administered the oath of office and secrecy to him.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nitish Kumar for swearing in as the Chief Minister of Bihar. “Congratulations to Shri Nitish Kumar Ji on taking oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister. He is an experienced administrator with a proven track record of good governance for many years. My best wishes to him for his tenure ahead," he said.

“Heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for the greetings," Nitish Kumar wrote on X in his response to PM Modi’s greeting.

Nitish Kumar, who first became the CM of a full term in 2005, is among the 10 longest-serving chief ministers in the country and has been in power for 20 years. He solidified his position as the most enduring and impactful leader in contemporary politics after the NDA secured a landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly elections.

Kumar’s tenure is defined by his governance-focused approach, which earned him the moniker of “Sushasan Babu" (Good Governance Man). Under his tenure, Bihar witnessed significant improvements in infrastructure, particularly road connectivity, and a marked decline in crime rates, often referred to as the “return of the rule of law" after the period of RJD governance – which is called “jungle raj".

The NDA, led by the JD(U) and the BJP, secured a sweeping majority in the Bihar elections 2025, winning 202 of the 243 assembly seats. The BJP became the single-largest party with 89 seats, the JD(U) won 85, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 19, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) five and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha four.

The opposition Mahagathbandhan was decimated to one of their worst performances in recent years, with the RJD under the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav managing to secure only 25 seats, while the Congress fared worse by winning only six out of the 61 seats it had contested.
