Iran on Sunday expressed doubt about the durability of the US-brokered ceasefire with Israel, warning it stands ready to respond if hostilities resume.

“We did not start the war, but we have responded to the aggressor with all our power," Iran’s armed forces chief of staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi, was quoted as saying by state television, referring to Israel.

“We have serious doubts over the enemy’s compliance with its commitments, including the ceasefire; we are ready to respond with force" if attacked again, he added.

This comes only six days after a ceasefire was announced by US President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Israel on June 13 launched a bombing campaign in Iran that killed top military commanders and scientists linked to its disputed nuclear program, making it one of the most serious attacks to date.

Israel has stated that it wants the Islamic Republic to stop developing a nuclear weapon. However, Tehran has maintained that it has the right to develop nuclear power for civilian purposes like energy.

The conflict between Israel and Iran also affected the nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, a staunch ally of Israel.

Extending its support to Israel, America carried out strikes on three key facilities used for Iran’s atomic program.

Trump has threatened further strikes should Iran enrich uranium to levels capable of manufacturing nuclear weapons.

In 2021, Iran enriched uranium to 60 percent, significantly surpassing the 3.67 percent limit set by a 2015 agreement, which the United States unilaterally exited in 2018, according to the Atomic Energy Agency.

To produce a nuclear weapon, Iran would need to enrich uranium to 90 percent.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of its nuclear arsenal, maintaining a policy of ambiguity. However, the Stockholm Peace Research Institute estimates that Israel possesses around 90 nuclear warheads.
