Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu on Wednesday said Congress MP Rahul Gandhi behaved like a “street goon" during the face-off between the two leaders inside Parliament premises.
Bittu, who Gandhi referred to as “a traitor", said he was “good" as long as he was in the Congress party and alleged that the Rae Bareli MP wanted to manhandle him before being stopped by KC Venugopal and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
Reacting to Gandhi’s handshake offer, Bittu said, “Haath milata hai meri jutti."
“I was good for you as long as I was with you (in Congress party)…Now, that I am in the BJP you started disliking me. But how can you say that for me? How can you say that I will come back to you? When I responded to him…if you see the video, he wanted to escalate it to manhandling with me. It was Venugopal who stopped him. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa stopped him…I have ‘Guru’s turban over my head. I am from Punjab. How can I bow before you?…Haath milata hai meri jutti. He tried to come after me but his MPs stopped him. You can see it in the video," Bittu told ANI.
Recalling the incident, the Union Minister said he is contemplating further course of action.
“He behaved like a ‘sadak ka gunda’ even outside. Gandhi family has always targeted Sikhs and turbans…None of the other MPs said anything. All suspended MPs were sitting there. We are all colleagues who meet everyday. Rahul Gandhi is LoP but I do not know what happened to him, what personal anger he has in him. He told me, you will come back to me again. He attempted to shake hands with me," he added.
Bittu also labelled Gandhi as “the biggest traitor" of India. “His goons killed thousands of Sikhs in this country. They vandalised our most sacred Gurudwara…When workers used to chant ‘shaheed’ for Rajiv Gandhi, they also used to also call Sardar Beant Singh ‘Shaheed-e-azam’. The problems in Punjab, the terrorism there – Sikhs were called but action was not taken. So, it was Sardar Beant Singh who calmed Punjab," he said.
What Happened Between Bittu & Rahul Gandhi
The incident took place right outside Parliament’s Makar Dwar, the main entrance which MPs take to enter the new Parliament building, where Gandhi was standing in solidarity with suspended Congress MPs, mostly from Punjab.
As soon as he was about to speak, Bittu passed by, and remarked, “They (suspended Congress MPs are sitting here as if they have won a war".
Gandhi hit back, “The thing is, here is a traitor walking right by. Take a look at the face. How he looks." Gandhi then extended his hand towards Bittu for a handshake and said, “Hello brother, my traitor friend".
“Don’t worry, you will come back (to the Congress)", Gandhi added, addressing the Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing.
Bittu, however, declined to shake hands with Gandhi and, while pointing to him, said, “desh ke dushman." The union minister was seen in the videos springing past the Makar Dwar stairs, repeating his “desh ke dushman" charge while pointing at the Congress leaders and suspended MPs, who continued to jeer at him.
Bittu, the grandson of late Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, was a former MP of the Congress from Ludhiana and Anandpur Sahib before he switched sides to the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
