US President Donald Trump said that Harvard University should cap its foreign student enrollment at a maximum of 15% and be compelled to provide the government with a comprehensive list of all international students currently enrolled.
“Harvard needs to behave themselves," he said, adding, “They are treating our country with disrespect, and all they are doing is getting themselves into more and more trouble."
Want Harvard To Be Great Again, Donald Trump Says
Donald Trump linked his demand for limitations on international student admissions to what he described as a decline in academic standards at the university.
“I want Harvard to be great again," he declared, questioning, “How can it be great when you have Harvard announce two weeks ago that they’re going to teach remedial mathematics?… How did these people get into Harvard?"
Donald Trump’s Praise For Columbia
While Donald Trump intensified his public battle with Harvard University, he praised Columbia University, despite also calling it “very, very bad." He said, “Columbia has been very, very bad — what they’ve done, they’re very antisemitic and lots of other things — but they’re working with us on finding a solution."
Why Donald Trump Administration Is Targeting Harvard?
Harvard University has become a primary target for the Donald Trump administration amid its ongoing campaign against elite academic institutions. The White House has frozen over $2.6 billion in federal research funding earmarked for the university, seeking to enforce compliance with a series of demands aimed at reshaping the institution’s policies and operations. Key among these demands is a push for greater governmental control over the university’s curricula.
In a direct challenge to the administration, Harvard previously filed a lawsuit and successfully secured a temporary court order, effectively blocking the Trump administration’s attempt to ban foreign students.
Trump’s team is now actively working to cancel all remaining federal contracts with the university, further intensifying the financial squeeze on the Ivy League institution, it was earlier reported.
