Chaos broke out outside the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday as factions of Gen Z protesters turned on each other while discussions were underway to decide an interim leader for the crisis-hit country.
Witnesses said groups of young demonstrators, who have spearheaded Nepal’s biggest protests in decades, got into heated arguments that soon spiralled into scuffles. The clash highlighted growing differences within the movement over who should lead the transition after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation.
The army had resumed talks with representatives of the Gen Z agitation to reach a consensus on an interim leader. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first woman to hold the post in 2016, has emerged as the frontrunner. Many protesters back her, praising her reputation for honesty and fearlessness. But some factions remain divided, stalling efforts to present a united front.
