Perplexity AI is taking on Chrome by offering its Comet browser to everyone for free and you don't need the Pro version to use the app

Perplexity has made its Comet AI browser free for everyone.

Perplexity has made its Comet AI browser free for everyone.

Perplexity AI is now ready to let millions of users try out its Comet AI web browser that is pitting itself against Google’s Chrome. Comet has been around in the market for a while but Perplexity had set up an invite system for its premium users to gain access for the browser.

Now, the gates have opened up for everyone to download the browser to their PCs and try out the AI-ness of the new product from the AI company.

Comet browser has been available with a waitlist since its launch earlier this year but the company has removed that friction for the Pro users in India. Perplexity has surely unlocked a wider user base with the latest news, especially since many of them are using the AI chatbot through their Airtel number.

Comet AI Browser For Free: Worth Trying?

The browser from Perplexity has features like the Comet Assistant built into its UI, making it a personal assistant for all the tasks. You can ask questions about any web page and the assistant will answer from the tabs that are open and also through the relevant browsing history.

This is similar to Google’s new Chrome addition where Gemini AI can perform agentic tasks, but that is only available for users in the US region for now. Perplexity had even tried to buy Chrome for Google which was immediately dismissed by the tech giant.

Perplexity made the browser available to all Pro users recently and News18 was officially able to confirm with the company about its access to all the Airtel users in the country. “Comet is now available to all Pro subscribers in India — no waitlist necessary — whether they have subscribed to Perplexity Pro directly or through an Airtel subscription," Perplexity informed us about the changes.

AI browsers could be shaping the next-gen avatar of the internet for millions and Comet-like products seem to be the future with other companies also lining up their versions. Opera recently introduced its Neon browser which is available for a premium and expect Firefox to have similar additions soon.
