According to the Italian firefighters cited by AP, a paraglider crashed into the side of a swimming pool in the city of Porto Sant Elpidio.

Skydiver and extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner was killed in a crash Thursday along the eastern coast of Italy, according to an official where the crash occurred.

The 56-year-old was the first skydiver to fall faster than the speed of sound during a 24-mile leap through the stratosphere more than a decade ago. His death was also confirmed by the mayor of the city, Massimiliano Ciarpella, in a social media post.

“Our community is deeply affected by the tragic disappearance of Felix Baumgartner, a figure of global prominence, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight," the mayor said.

Italian firefighters who responded to the scene said that a paraglider had crashed into the side of a swimming pool in the city of Porto Sant’Elpidio.

As per reports, the crash also left a woman injured as she was hit by Baumgartner. She was rushed to hospital following the accident and has not suffered major injuries.

Meanwhile, Baumgartner died after he lost the control of the powered hang glider.

The Daily Mail reported that he lost consciousness following the crash and later died of cardiac arrest.
