Tata has risen from the rank of a relationship manager to the chief credit officer at one of India’s biggest banks.

The Chief Credit Officer of HDFC Bank, Jimmy Tata, has got a two-year extension as the credit head of the country’s largest private sector lender, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter confirmed.
Sources tell CNBC-TV18 that Tata was set to retire on July 31, 2026 — in case the extension didn’t happen. Tata is a veteran at HDFC Bank, having joined the lender at the start of its journey in 1994.
What makes Tata’s appointment important is the fact that the bank’s CEO, Sashidhar Jagadhisan — in his guidance for FY27 — has said that the bank would see credit growth above the industry average in this fiscal. And Tata’s continuity as the Chief Credit Officer is expected to play a key role in this.
Tata’s extension comes just before the nomination and remuneration committee of the board is set to meet to take a call on who the next CEO would be. The bank’s CEO, Sashidhar Jagadishan’s current term is getting over on October 26, 2026. The bank has already missed the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) deadline on this.
Jimmy Tata’s tenure at HDFC Bank
Tata joined as a Relationship Manager in the Corporate Banking Department and over the years was promoted to Head of the Corporate Banking Department. In June 2013, he was appointed as Chief Risk Officer of HDFC Bank.
In 2020, Sanmoy Chakrabarti was appointed as Chief Risk Officer of the bank; Tata was moved to Chief Credit Officer of HDFC Bank. Tata is also a Director on the Board of the Asset Reconstruction Co. Pvt. Ltd (IARC), HDB Financial Services, and a Trustee on the HDB Employees Welfare Trust.
CNBC-TV18 has reached out to HDFC Bank for comments on the development. The comments from them are awaited.
