iOS 19 update has been widely expected to release this year but Apple could have big plans to change its naming for all the platforms.

iOS 19 update might not happen this year as Apple could have bigger plans.
Apple is going to change the way its platforms are named from this year onwards so instead of the iOS 19 version, we might see the iOS 26 version announced at the WWDC 2025 keynote next month. These details come via Mark Gurman at Bloomberg in his report on Thursday.
The company has not changed the naming sequence for its OS versions till date but it seems 2025 could be the year when we see that change to the year of its release. Microsoft did this with Windows for many years, now we could see it with the iOS, iPad and macOS versions.
iOS 26 Release This Year: Why Apple Changing Names?
The company is yet to confirm these changes but the report suggests Apple will follow Microsoft’s method from the 90s with the naming of OS’s. So just like we had the Windows 95, 98 and 2000 versions, Apple will announce the iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 and even the visionOS 26 versions this year.
The first iOS version was released in 2007 along with the iPhone model and Apple could finally change how the iOS platform is called among the users. The new rebranding for its platforms is likely to be confirmed by the WWDC 2025 keynote starting on June 9.
That’s not all, using the same sequence across all platforms will bring harmony to the Apple ecosystem which does make a lot of sense. Currently, you have the iOS 18/iPadOS 18 versions for iPhones and iPads. The Apple Watch users have the watchOS 11 version, while macOS names work differently.
So it seems all the hype and talk around iOS 19 can be put to one side, and now eagerly wait for more details about iOS 26 version coming out this year. If it does happen, it will be funny to see the iOS 26 update running on the iPhone 11 model later this year.
Either way, Apple has some big plans for the next iOS update, which could see its biggest UI and design overhaul in years. Maybe the biggest news about the next iOS version could be its rebranding and we are eager to see if that happens at the WWDC 2025 in a few weeks time.
