Elon Musk responded to US President Donald Trump’s veiled threat of deportation with a cryptic yet charged post on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a naturalized US citizen in 2002, wrote, “So tempting to escalate this. So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now."

The post came after Donald Trump told reporters that he would “take a look" at the possibility of deporting Elon Musk amid a public feud that rapidly escalated from policy disagreements to personal jabs. The comment was made in response to Elon Musk’s fierce criticism of the Trump administration’s tax-cut and spending bill which the Tesla boss has labeled “utterly insane and destructive."
Donald Trump did not stop at Elon Musk’s deportation as the US President also suggested that his administration might deploy DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency)- the cost-cutting unit Musk previously led as a “special government employee"- against the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.
“We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon," Donald Trump said.
Donald Trump vs Elon Musk: From Allies To Adversaries
Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s fallout has become one of the most public feuds of 2025. Elon Musk spent months inside the White House heading an aggressive efficiency drive that gutted foreign aid programs and federal agencies. He left the White House in May after which he launched a barrage of attacks on Donald Trump’s spending package, warning that the bill will balloon the national debt.
Donald Trump dismissed Elon Musk’s concerns as financially motivated, accusing him of being upset over losing electric vehicle tax credits under the new plan. He said earlier, “He’s upset… that he’s losing his EV mandate. But you know, he could lose a lot more than that. Elon can lose a lot more than that."
The US President also repeated earlier claims that Elon Musk had benefited more than anyone in history from government subsidies and suggested that without them, the Tesla founder would “have to close up shop and head back to South Africa."
