US stock futures declined on Thursday as rising Treasury yields and persistent inflation concerns dampened investor sentiment, offsetting optimism surrounding US-China diplomacy and the continued growth of the artificial intelligence sector.
Futures linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, while S&P 500 futures were down 0.6%. Nasdaq-100 futures slid 1%, pointing to further weakness in technology stocks after a subdued trading session on Wall Street.
Markets remained under pressure following a sharp sell-off in government bonds. The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2007 on Wednesday after economic data signalled stronger-than-expected business activity, reinforcing concerns that inflation could remain elevated and keep interest rates higher for longer.
Investors are now focused on a highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which is expected to shape the outlook for trade and geopolitical relations between the world's two largest economies.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington and Beijing had agreed to extend their trade truce by two months, pushing its expiry date to January 10 from November 10. The arrangement, known as the Busan Agreement, was originally reached last year after a prolonged trade dispute that saw tariff rates surge and China restrict exports of critical rare earth minerals.
Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday after meeting Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Bessent said the extension would preserve the current economic detente while broader issues are discussed by the two leaders.
With the trade ceasefire extended, discussions between Trump and Xi are expected to focus on strategic issues including competition in artificial intelligence, the conflict involving Iran and supply chains for critical minerals.
Several leading US technology executives are also scheduled to attend a dinner with the two leaders on Thursday, underscoring the growing importance of AI and semiconductor policy in US-China relations.
