US President Donald Trump expressed his frustration with the current impasse between Russia and Ukraine, saying he does not “want to waste time" as several rounds of negotiations have failed to make any progress.

Trump’s frustration appeared not only to be directed towards Russia, but also Kyiv and its European allies as they faced a deepening rift with the United States, according to NBC News. Longtime US allies are struggling to balance pressure from Washington while appearing defiant against Russia’s sweeping demands.

However, the US President has signalled that his patience is running thin. “They would like us to go to a meeting over the weekend in Europe, and we’ll make a determination, depending on what they come back with. We don’t want to be wasting time," he said at a roundtable meeting with business leaders.

‘You Have To Let People Fight It Out’

Trump appeared irked at Europe, which has rejected key proposals of his peace proposal that require Ukraine to surrender land to Russia and cut its military strength. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday said Washington was still pushing for Kyiv to make big territorial concessions to Russia

“Sometimes you have to let people fight it out and sometimes you don’t," Trump added, casting further doubt over his desire to be involved in a new round of talks. He also said he had exchanged “pretty strong words" on Ukraine during a call with European leaders, whom he called “very good friends of mine."

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told a news conference Thursday that he, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had suggested to Trump that they finalize peace proposals together with the US over the weekend.

Trump had initially set a deadline for Kyiv to accept his peace plan before Thanksgiving, but due to European intervention, it has been delayed, with no set timeframe.

Ukraine On The Back Foot

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy said the status of the eastern Donetsk region and future control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant were the two key points of contention in talks with Washington on a deal to end the war with Russia.

“They see Ukrainian forces leaving the territory of Donetsk region, and the supposed compromise is that Russian forces do not enter this territory … which they already call a ‘free economic zone’," Zelenskyy told reporters.

Ukraine has been trying to strike a delicate balance between appeasing Trump and not giving up crucial territory it still controls in the eastern Donbas region, which Moscow has vowed to take by force if required. Trump’s sweeping plan, which critics argue largely favours Russia, has shaken the European continent and left leaders scrambling for better negotiations.

Zelenskyy was due to hold virtual talks with the so-called Coalition of the Willing, led by Britain and France, as the US piles on pressure on Kyiv to accept Trump’s peace plan.
