A political slugfest broke out after Samajwadi Party MP Mohibbullah Nadvi made a controversial remark in Parliament over alleged Muslim suppression in the country, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the former of openly endorsing extremist narratives and inciting violence.
While speaking in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament on Wednesday, the SP MP from Rampur said, “We may have to do jihad… how long will Muslims be suppressed?"

The comment drew a sharp condemnation from the BJP, which accused the Akhilesh Yadav-led party of openly assaulting the Constitution and Dr BR Ambedkar’s principles.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that Nadvi’s remark amounted to support for “dangerous" statements earlier made by cleric Arshad Madani, who had been criticised for comments perceived as justifying terror attacks.
“Samajwadi Party MP Nadvi openly backs dangerous statement by Madni who legitimised terror attacks. Re iterates “Julm Hoga to Jihad Hoga" justification," he said in a post on X.

He further claimed that Nadvi’s remarks reflected a broader pattern within the Opposition. “After Chidambaram, Husain Dalwai, and Congress’s ecosystem, now the SP is legitimising jihad? Is this the politics they want to mainstream?" he asked.
Poonawalla also questioned the SP MP’s objections to the Waqf Act, asserting that both Parliament and the Supreme Court have upheld the legislation. “The Act has been given a go-ahead by Parliament and the SC, but the SP wants to do jihad against it?" he said, calling the MP’s comments a “direct assault on the Constitution and the principles of Dr Ambedkar."
BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari also echoed similar sentiments and slammed Nadvi for his remarks. He accused Nadvi of openly inciting against the Indian state for vote bank politics.
