Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire after days of deadly border clashes, following talks, announced US President Donald Trump on Saturday.

In a post on TruthSocial, Trump said he had spoken to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and secured their agreement to halt all shooting with immediate effect.

Trump said both leaders had agreed to return to the original peace accord reached earlier with US and Malaysian support. He described the latest ceasefire as an important step towards preventing a wider conflict between the two neighbouring countries.

The US president also thanked Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for helping mediate between the two sides. According to Trump, Malaysia played a key role in bringing both governments back to the negotiating table.

Trump said Thailand and Cambodia were now “ready for peace" and keen to continue trade relations with the United States. He added that it was an honour to work with both leaders to stop a conflict that could have turned into a major regional war.
