With just six days left before Bangladesh’s general elections, clashes broke out outside the official residence of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Friday. The violence began when government employees protesting for higher wages came face to face with police.

The protesters were demanding the implementation of the Ninth Pay Scale. According to an NDTV report, they gathered at Shaheed Minar in the morning and marched towards Jamuna, calling for the immediate publication of a government gazette based on the pay commission’s recommendations.

The unrest comes at a sensitive time, just days before Bangladesh is set to hold its first general election since deadly violence shook the country in August 2024. That unrest forced then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India.

The upcoming election, scheduled for February 12, is being held under the interim administration led by Yunus.
