A Chinese national who falsified her nationality to become a mayor in the Philippines has been sentenced to life in prison for human trafficking.
Alice Guo, who had been elected mayor of Bamban town, north of the capital, was found guilty of running an online gambling operation where hundreds of workers were forced to commit scams under threat of torture.
The sprawling complex included office buildings, luxury villas, and a large swimming pool. Authorities discovered the centre in March last year after a Vietnamese employee escaped and alerted police.
During the raid, officials found over 700 workers from the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Rwanda. Court documents showed that Guo was listed as president of the company that owned the compound.
A Manila court had earlier ruled in June that Guo, 35, was “undisputedly a Chinese citizen" and therefore ineligible to hold the mayoral office.
Guo, along with seven co-defendants appearing via videolink, was sentenced to life imprisonment. State prosecutor Olivia Torrevillas said outside court: “After over just one year, the court… gave us a favourable decision. Alice (Guo) was convicted along with seven other co-accused. Life imprisonment."
The other defendants were later identified by the court as Jaimielyn Santos Cruz, Rachelle Malonzo Carreon, Walter Wong Rong, Wang Weili, Wuli Dong, Nong Ding Chang, and Lang Xu Po.
Guo had fled the Philippines and was arrested in Indonesia in September last year. Additionally, she continues to face separate charges, including money laundering and graft.
