Celebrations erupted worldwide after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran on Sunday has confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in recent strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, with media reports stating that he died in the early hours of Saturday.

The government announced 40 days of national mourning following his death, even as celebrations were reported in several parts of Iran and across the world.

With Khamenei’s demise, a hugely consequential chapter in Iran’s modern history has come to an end, leaving uncertainty over what comes next and who may succeed him.

Videos on social media showed people cheering and car honking through the streets of Tehran as some Iranians marked the news of Khamenei’s death.

People gathered in Fardis, where drivers honked their horns and fireworks were set off in celebration.

Similar scenes were reported in Besat Town, a suburb of Karaj, where residents took to the streets after the announcement.

Celebrations were also reported among Iranian communities abroad. Thousands gathered in central London, chanting and celebrating following news of Khamenei’s death. Some participants were heard shouting slogans, including chants of “Keir Starmer’s a wanker" were directed at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Iranians were also seen celebrating in Frankfurt, while gatherings took place in Toronto, where crowds described the moment as the end of an era.

Iranians and Jews in several locations joined celebrations following the announcement.

Even as celebrations were reported, supporters gathered at the Hazrat Masoumeh shrine in Qom, where chants of “Death to America" and “Death to Israel" were heard following the announcement.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed what it described as the “most ferocious offensive operation in history" against Israel and the United States. Iranian state media reported that an intensive operation targeting Israel and US bases could begin shortly.
