US President Donald Trump slammed Canada again over a controversial ‘fake’ advertisement featuring former President Ronald Reagan criticising tariffs, which prompted him to cancel trade negotiations with America’s northern neighbour. In his latest remarks, Trump said Canada was caught cheating the United States.

“CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!! They fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like Tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY. Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

“Canada has long cheated on Tariffs, charging our farmers as much as 400%. Now they, and other countries, can’t take advantage of the US any longer. Thank you to the Ronald Reagan Foundation for exposing this FRAUD. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!" he added.

In subsequent Truth Social posts, Trump said the United States was wealthy, powerful and nationally secure again because of tariffs. “THE STOCK MARKET IS STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE BECAUSE OF TARIFFS!" he said.

US-Canada Trade Talks Cancelled

Earlier, Trump said all trade negotiations with Canada have been cancelled over the controversial advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan. “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs," he said on Truth Social.

The ad was posted by Ontario Premier Doug Ford on X and it begins with Reagan saying: “When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs, and sometimes for a short while it works, but only for a short time. But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer".

What escalated the matter was that the ad was used during a sporting event. Ontario ran the ad during a game in the American League Championship Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners, with an estimated 9 million people watching.

“The ad was for $75,000,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts. TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED," Trump said in the post.

Meanwhile, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation said the ad “misrepresents the Presidential Radio address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks." The organisation said it was “reviewing its legal options" over the use of Reagan’s address.

Trump’s decision to end trade negotiations with Canada on Thursday marks another breakdown in ties between the two neighbours. The latest twist in relations between the US and Canada came just over two weeks after Canadian PM Mark Carney visited Trump at the White House to seek a relaxation of stiff US tariffs.

Trump’s global sectoral tariffs, particularly on steel, aluminum, and autos, have hit Canada hard, forcing job losses and squeezing businesses, increasing pressure on Carney to get a breakthrough in trade talks.
