Political violence in Bangladesh continued on Tuesday night with the killing of Azizur Rahman Musabbir, a leader of the Swechchhasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of the Bangladesh ist Party (BNP). Police and party sources said Musabbir was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the capital, Dhaka.

The incident comes at a time of rising violence in the country ahead of national elections scheduled for February 12, with the model code of conduct already in force.

What we know about the attack?

Musabbir, who earlier served as general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechchhasebak Dal, was attacked around 8.30 pm local time in the Karwan Bazaar area of Dhaka on Tuesday. Police said the shooting took place near the Super Star Hotel, close to the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex, one of the busiest commercial zones in the city.

According to initial accounts, the assailants opened fire at close range. Musabbir was hit and he collapsed at the spot. Another person was also injured in the attack.

Police said both victims were first taken to BRB Hospital. Musabbir was later shifted to a private hospital in the Panthapath area, where he succumbed to his injuries. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division, Fazlul Karim, told local media that Musabbir suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The injured person was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further treatment. Authorities said the person’s condition was stable.

Investigators said the attackers fired several rounds before fleeing the scene.

Rising political violence ahead of polls

Musabbir’s killing is the latest in a series of violent incidents in recent weeks. Just days earlier, a Jubo Dal leader was shot in a separate incident. On December 12, Osman Hadi, described as a prominent anti-India leader, was also shot dead.

Security officials said a search operation has been launched to identify and track down those responsible for the latest attack. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning.

The shooting led to unrest in the Karwan Bazaar area. A group of people blocked the Saarc Fountain intersection, causing heavy traffic disruption late Tuesday night.

Around 10.30 pm, army personnel reached the spot and cleared the road, dispersing protesters and restoring traffic flow. Police and army units remained deployed in the area for several hours to prevent further disturbances.
