The BJP took a decisive step towards government formation in Manipur by appointing its General Secretary Tarun Chugh as the Central Observer for the election of the Legislative Party Leader in the state.
The move signals that the party is preparing to restore an elected government ahead of the expiry of President’s Rule.
Senior leaders and legislators from the ruling Democratic Alliance (NDA), along with BJP’s Manipur unit chief, arrived in New Delhi on Sunday to attend a high-level meeting scheduled today.
The meeting comes just days before the six-month extension of President’s Rule in Manipur ends on February 12, intensifying political activity around the formation of a new government.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13 last year, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9 amid threats of a no-confidence motion by legislators.
The state has been grappling with prolonged unrest since ethnic violence broke out on May 3, 2023, which has claimed over 260 lives and displaced more than 60,000 people.
Speculation about the return of a popular government has grown as the deadline for President’s Rule approaches.
Speaking to reporters at Imphal Airport before leaving for Delhi, BJP MLA N Biren Singh said all NDA legislators had been called for the meeting.
“There have been important developments after our recent meeting of BJP legislators. Since all NDA partners have now been summoned, there is a strong possibility of government formation," he said.
People’s Party (NPP) legislator Janghemlung Panmei struck a cautious note, saying the alliance would work towards restoring stability in the state.
“We want good things to happen for Manipur again. The direction ahead will become clear after the meeting," he said.
BJP state president A Sharda Devi also expressed optimism, stating that the meeting could pave the way for the formation of a new elected government.
A person familiar with the discussions said the meeting would focus on building consensus among NDA legislators and that representatives from the Kuki-Zo community may also attend.
In the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, the BJP currently holds 32 seats. Its NDA allies include the NPP with seven MLAs, JD(U) with six, NPF with five, and Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) with two members.
The Congress has five legislators, while three MLAs are Independents.
