The Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a heated confrontation between the leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, as discussions on electoral reforms escalated into chaos.

Shah defended the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral reforms, arguing it was essential to remove undocumented migrants from voter rolls. However, Gandhi challenged him to a debate at his press conference about ‘vote theft’ allegations.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed dissatisfaction with Shah’s response to the opposition’s concerns, suggesting Shah was merely reading from a script and failed to address issues raised by leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Kalyan Banerjee, and Supriya Sule.

Gogoi stated, “We expected the Home Minister to answer the opposition’s questions from the last two days of discussion. Instead, he followed a script."

Gogoi also refuted Shah’s claim that Congress never approached the Election Commission, stating, “Our party leaders have held numerous press conferences outside the Election Commission and lodged many complaints. Why didn’t the Home Minister notice the ‘polluted’ voter list during the Lok Sabha polls when they dreamed of crossing 400 seats?"

Chaos In Lok Sabha

During Shah’s speech, the house erupted into chaos as the Opposition staged a walkout. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya called it “utterly shameful" that Rahul Gandhi led the walkout while the Home Minister was answering their questions.

Surya criticized the opposition for their persistent demands for a debate on SIR and EVM, which disrupted Parliament proceedings, only to walk out when Shah addressed their questions.

BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Shah’s speech, stating that he effectively countered the opposition’s propaganda on SIR. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commended Shah’s speech as “outstanding," highlighting how he exposed the lies of the opposition.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal defended the SIR, stating that the exercise aimed to make the voter list “transparent and clean." He accused the opposition of walking out due to objections to this and claimed that the opposition’s actions revealed their lack of public support.
