At least seven people have been arrested in connection with the mob lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh area over allegations of blasphemy, as violent protests erupted across the country following the death of a student political leader.

Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said the Rapid Action Battalion had arrested seven suspects over the lynching of Das after conducting operations at various locations. They were identified as Md Limon Sarkar, Md Tarek Hossain, Md Manik Mia, Ershad Ali, Nijum Uddin, Alomgir Hossain and Md Miraj Hossain Akon.

Dipu Chandra Das, a young garment factory worker, was lynched to death by an enraged mob in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, over allegations of blasphemy. He was tied up, killed and then his body was set afire while thousands of people watched, in a glaring display of lawlessness and mobocracy in Bangladesh under Yunus’ regime.

“On Thursday, at around 9 pm, an enraged crowd caught him and beat him to death, accusing him of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet. They then set the body on fire," Bhaluka Police duty officer Ripon Mia told an international news channel.

The incident sparked widespread outrage among minorities in Bangladesh and political circles in neighbouring India, underscoring the danger facing Hindus in Bangladesh following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in last year’s student uprising. Since Yunus came to power as a caretaker head of government, several attacks have targeted the minority Hindu community.

In a statement, the interim government on Friday condemned the lynching of the Hindu man in Mymensingh city, saying there is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh. “The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared," it added.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Das, calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible and the assurance of exemplary punishment.

The incident came against the backdrop of escalating unrest following the death of Inqilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Violent protests broke out across the country as the mob targeted the offices of media houses, including The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, while protesters also vented their anger at the partially demolished residence of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
